As one school year draws to an end and the start of another approaches, I frequently get asked which bag makes the best PE bag- canvas or polyester? I think both are fab (obviously!) but both have their advantages and disadvantages. To make your decision a little easier, here’s my quick 411 on whether you need canvas, polyester or both!
Canvas PE Bags
My heart loves a bit of canvas. Canvas is a sturdy, heavy-duty material that can withstand heavy wear and tear, making it ideal for carrying clunky items like boots and trainers. A canvas PE bag is always my first choice over the thin cotton PE bags available which, although cheaper, unravel and become tatty almost immediately. Our canvas PE bags are made from 100% organically sourced cotton which is a big plus for the environment and a more eco-friendly option compared to synthetic alternatives. Canvas is also a breathable material, which means that it is less likely to trap moisture and odours; something to consider if, like us, the kit rarely comes home midweek.
There are some drawbacks to canvas; it can be a bit more difficult to clean and may not offer the water resistance needed to store wet kit. If you’re looking to use these as a swimming bag, it might be worth investing in a waterproof pouch to keep the wet stuff separate.
Polyester PE Bags
Polyester is a synthetic material that is lightweight, durable, easy to clean and water-resistant. If you’re after a bag to use for swimming or all-weather outdoor sports, then this is the bag for you. Our polyester PE bags come in a range of fun colours and the extra zip pocket is a great place to keep goggles, swim hats, shin pads and more. There are some drawbacks: they are less breathable than canvas bags, which means that they can trap moisture and odours more easily. Also, polyester bags rank much lower on the eco credentials. However, our range of 100% recycled polyester PE bags are a great compromise when you need that extra durability.
So, which PE bag is the best?
For me it’s both - surprise surprise! I absolutely LOVE a canvas PE bag. In my opinion, from an aesthetic point of view, these win hands down. The thick cotton canvas and beautiful range of colours give a real feel of quality and I’m always a huge fan of anything made from natural and sustainably sourced materials. If you are looking for a bag that is eco-friendly and durable, our canvas PE bags are a great choice. However, there are times when you just need to have a polyester alternative. My gang all have recycled polyester swimming bags which means they can keep their school clothes dry when carrying their kit to and from the pool. So my advice, buy both!
